Programmes

The school offers the IB continuum of programmes for students aged 3 to 18, divided into Preschool (ages 3-5), Elementary School (ages 5-11), Middle School (ages 11-14), and High School (ages 14-18). The curriculum is concept-based and designed to foster inquiry, critical thinking, and collaboration. Additionally, the school hosts La Petite French School d’Aberdeen, a home language programme offered in both English and French.

Admissions

The school operates a year-round open enrolment policy with rolling entry, though applications for the start of the academic year in August are recommended by May 1st. The process involves an online application, a £50 application fee, and potential assessments or meetings with the Principal to determine grade placement. Upon acceptance, new students are supported by counsellors and a Parent Teacher Organisation (PTO) network, with a buddy system in place for the first few weeks.

Calendar

The school year runs from August to June. The campus is open for wraparound care from 7:15 am until 6:00 pm.

About the campus

Located on a green, leafy campus in Pitfodels, the school features a blend of traditional granite architecture and modern, purpose-built facilities. Key amenities include two teaching wings with flexible classrooms, fully equipped science labs, visual and performing art studios, a multi-level library, and a 300-seat theatre. Outdoor spaces include woods, courtyards, playparks, and two tennis courts, alongside the sports complex.

Co-curriculars

The Encore! programme provides a dynamic range of after-school clubs, sports, and activities, including seasonal sports teams, a jazz band, and drama. Facilities for these activities include a 25-metre swimming pool, an 8-metre climbing wall, two fitness centres, a dance studio, and FIFA-grade all-weather playing fields. The school also hosts community-based programmes such as the ISA Aberdeen Swimming club.

  • Nick LittleHead of School

    Nick joined ISA as Head of School in August 2018. He holds a degree in history from Oxford and a postgraduate degree in law, and previously spent 16 years running an international school near Shanghai.

  • Kevin HawkinsChief Operating Officer

    Kevin joined ISA in July 2025 as COO, having previously spent six years as Head of Finance at Millfield School. He is a chartered accountant and a graduate of the University of Reading.

  • Morio KajiwaraPreschool and Elementary School Principal

    Morio has held various roles at ISA since 1998, including teacher, coach, and assistant principal, before becoming the Elementary School Principal. He holds an MA in Education from UC Berkeley.

  • Sarah CusworthMiddle and High School Principal

    Sarah joined ISA in 2019 and has worked in international schools across Guatemala, Malaysia, China, Mexico, and South Korea. She holds an MSc in psychology and an MEd from Framingham State University.

  • Andrea TaylorHead of Preschool

    Andrea has been with ISA since 1990, starting as a student work placement. She holds a BA in Childhood Practice from the University of Aberdeen and has been with the ISA Preschool since 2010.

  • Paul BertolottoPreschool and Elementary School Assistant Principal

    Paul joined ISA in 2016 after serving as a depute headteacher at Edinburgh Academy and a headteacher at an independent school in Aberdeen. He holds an MEd and has extensive experience in education research and lecturing.
