Admissions
The admission process for 9th-12th grade applicants includes a required virtual interview via Zoom, completion of the Gateway to Prep Candidate Profile, and submission of TOEFL results for international applicants. The application deadline is January 15, with financial assistance applications due February 1. The school is committed to accessibility for families of all income levels.
Calendar

Facilities
About the campus
Located on a mesa in Carpinteria, the campus features dormitories, the Booth Commons dining hall, the Wykoff Library, and the Inquiry Collaborative, which houses classrooms and study pods. Athletic facilities include two gyms, two pools, eight tennis courts, recreational grass fields, an eight-lane track, a turf field, a baseball field, an athletic training center, and a weightroom. Health and wellness services are provided at the Ellis House.
Co-curriculars
Students participate in a wide range of activities, including public service initiatives like the Wednesday Public Service Night and peer-led learning labs. The arts program features offerings in ceramics, sculpture, photography, digital media, theater, dance, and various musical ensembles such as the Chorale, Camerata, orchestra, and jazz ensemble. Athletic opportunities include competitive teams in sports such as tennis, basketball, track and field, and soccer.

Alexandra Lockett is the 8th Head of School at Cate, the first woman to hold the position. She previously served as Head of Upper School at Crystal Springs Uplands School and spent 16 years at San Francisco University High School, where she held roles including Dean of Students. She is a graduate of Brown University and holds an MBA from Mills College.
- Sandi PierceAssistant Head of School
Sandi Pierce has served Cate School for over three decades, previously as Controller and currently as Assistant Head for Finance and Operations. She has prior experience as a Director of Dining Services at various independent schools and universities. She holds a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
- Andrew MacDonnellHead for Advancement
Andrew MacDonnell oversees all fundraising efforts, including annual, capital, endowment, and planned giving programs, and leads the Advancement team. He previously led the $120 million For Cate & Forever Campaign and has helped generate nearly $60 million in philanthropic support since July 2023. He holds a BA from the University of Denver.

Maude Bond leads both admission strategy and college counseling efforts at Cate. Before this role, she built Cate’s nationally recognized College Counseling program and previously worked in admissions at Columbia University. She holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from The New School.
- Joy DoyleVisual Arts Department Chair
Joy Doyle has been a member of the Visual Arts Department since 2015 and has served as department chair since 2022. A practicing artist with expertise in drawing, painting, and sculpture, she previously worked in graphic design and taught art at the Francis Parker School in Chicago. She holds a BA from Kenyon College.

John Knecht serves as Instrumental Music Director and Chair of the Performing Arts Department. A former arts advocate on Capitol Hill and Innovation Consultant for Fortune 500 companies, he has performed professionally in various musical groups. He holds an MBA from UCLA and a BA from UNC Chapel Hill.

Vanessa Cruz-Santana is a 2006 Cate graduate who returned to the school as Director of Financial Assistance in 2018. She previously worked in admissions in New York City and holds a BS from Hamilton College and an MSEd from the University of Pennsylvania.
