Charyl Stockwell Preparatory Academy

The school is committed to educating the "whole child" by addressing academic, social, emotional, moral, and physical needs. It utilizes the "Understanding by Design" framework and Dr. Arthur Costa’s "Habits of Mind" to foster problem-solving and intellectual growth. The "Smart Character Choices" program integrates six core traits—kindness, optimism, getting along, responsibility, respect, and work ethic—into daily learning to promote positive character development.

The academic curriculum is guided by the Michigan Core Curriculum framework and organized through a backward design approach to create interdisciplinary units of study. The district offers a Montessori curriculum for its preschool students. For secondary students, the program includes opportunities for student leadership, robotics, and athletics, with a focus on mastery learning and high academic expectations.

The Teacher Support Team (TST) provides a district-wide model for identifying and supporting students with learning challenges through proactive, focused interventions. TST teachers, who are trained in special education, deliver individual support to students identified through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process. Additionally, the school offers an Academically Gifted (AG) program that clusters identified students in multi-age configurations to provide challenging, complex learning experiences.

The district accepts applications for Kindergarten through High School on a rolling basis, with an annual Open Enrollment period from October to January. If applications exceed available seats, a third-party lottery is conducted, and waitlists are established. Prospective families are encouraged to participate in a guided tour to experience the school environment before enrolling. Enrollment requires documentation including birth certificates, immunization records, and, where applicable, custody papers.

The district operates across three campuses: the Elementary school and Montessori Preschool in Howell, and the Middle and High schools in Brighton. Facilities support a range of activities, including dedicated spaces for athletics, robotics, and performing arts. The district also provides a Student Enrichment Program (SEP) that includes before and after-school care, a campus shuttle service, and supervised morning study sessions for secondary students.

The school offers a variety of enrichment activities, including Lego Engineering, Lego League, drawing, chess, and robotics. Students may also participate in athletics, sports clinics, and youth sports leagues. Additionally, student leadership opportunities are available through Middle School and High School Student Government, as well as chapters of the National Junior Honor Society and National Honor Society.
