Downside School is a co-educational independent boarding and day school for pupils aged 11-18, located near Bath. It is recognized for its Benedictine values and commitment to academic and personal excellence.

Term structure

Three terms

Teaching approach

Rooted in the Benedictine tradition, the school’s philosophy centers on the concept of transformation, aiming to help pupils become their best possible selves. It prioritizes individual growth and self-fulfilment over objective attainment for its own sake. The school seeks to nurture each child's greatest talents, encouraging them to find their own path to a 'life fully lived' by eschewing the mainstream.

Programmes

The academic programme spans from the First Form through to the Upper Sixth. The curriculum includes a broad range of subjects across faculties such as Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Mathematics, English, Languages (Modern Foreign and Classics), Humanities (Geography, History, Economics & Business Studies, History of Art, Psychology, Politics, Theology), and Creative/Performing Arts. Pupils follow a pathway that includes GCSEs in the Fourth and Fifth Form and A-levels in the Sixth Form, supported by a Sixth Form Lecture Programme.

Outcomes

The school reports excellent academic, sporting, and cultural results, which it attributes to a process of self-fulfilment and personal growth. It emphasizes that pupils are encouraged to become their best possible selves rather than focusing solely on comparative attainment. The school provides careers advice and university entrance guidance to support pupils in their future pathways.
