Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley is a private, dual-accredited bilingual immersion school serving students from preschool through 8th grade. It provides an academic environment where students learn in both French and English to become open-minded, adaptable global citizens.
Curriculum
Teaching approach
The school is committed to a holistic view of learning that combines the rigor of French pedagogy with a comprehensive social-emotional learning program. It emphasizes core values of compassion, curiosity, courage, and community, while fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The educational approach is project-centered and play-based in the early years, evolving into a dual-accredited bilingual program that encourages critical thinking and respect for diverse perspectives.
Programmes
The school offers a bilingual curriculum from preschool through 8th grade, with students immersed in French language and culture for approximately 80% of the day in the early years. The academic program includes core subjects such as language arts, science, and math, with English instruction integrated to build literacy and academic skills. Specialized pathways include the Accelerated French Program (AFP), which provides late entry points in grades 1, 2, and 6 for students without prior French exposure. The school also offers a Section Internationale Américaine.
Outcomes
The school aims to produce confident, multilingual learners who are prepared for high school placement after 8th grade. Graduates are described as articulate speakers, critical thinkers, and successful citizens capable of navigating an interconnected world. Alumni have gone on to pursue diverse professional paths, including roles in energy, sustainability, and education.
Student support
Learning support
The school employs an individualized approach, meeting students where they are in their language development. A Student Support Team (SST) was established in 2012 to assist students. Teachers are trained in social-emotional learning (SEL), utilizing a theme-based program called "Vers le Pacifique" (Toward Peace) to support conflict resolution and peer mediation.
