Places are allocated based on queue time, with the earliest registration possible from 1 February in the year after a child is born. Sibling priority may apply if the sibling is already enrolled or attending an IES school. Families can join the queue regardless of their current residence, though school places are only offered to registered residents in Sweden. No entrance exams or selection tests are used.

The school year is divided into an autumn and spring term. Key dates typically include an autumn break in October, a sports break in March, and an Easter break in the spring. Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the academic year.

Campuses feature supervised recreation areas, libraries for study and reading, and dining facilities providing nutritious lunches. Some locations operate as closed campuses with perimeter fencing to ensure student safety. Facilities are designed to support both academic work and social interaction during breaks.
