The school operates under the motto 'every student matters every day' and utilizes a Parallel Education Model that recognizes the unique social, emotional, and educational needs of students. It employs an Explicit Teaching Model to master core literacy and numeracy skills, while fostering an entrepreneurial and enterprising spirit. The academic offering spans Early Learning (ages 3–5), Junior School (Prep–Year 4), Middle School (Years 5–8), Pre-Senior School (Year 9), and Senior School (Years 10–12). The Senior School curriculum is driven by the VCE Program. Core literacy and numeracy are developed through explicit instruction in the Junior years, while the Middle years combine explicit instruction with student-centred learning to broaden analytical thinking.

Haileybury aims for high academic performance, with a goal in the Senior School for 50% of students to place in the top 10% nationally, 75% in the top 20%, and 90% in the top 30%. Graduates are expected to possess strong core academic skills, broad analytical thinking abilities, and the capacity to operate in a rapidly changing world. The school has received multiple Australian Education Awards, including Australian School of the Year.

Haileybury is a waitlisted, non-select entry school that accepts applications from a child's date of birth. The enrolment process involves an online application, an interview with the Head of Campus, and, for senior year levels (Years 9–12), academic testing. Priority is given to siblings of current students and children of Old Haileyburians.

The school operates on a four-term system. The academic year typically commences in late January and concludes in early December, with breaks between terms and public holidays observed. Senior school VCE exams generally commence in late October.

The school operates across four Melbourne campuses (Berwick, Brighton, City, and Keysborough), an online school (Haileybury Pangea), a school in Darwin (Haileybury Rendall School), and a partner school in Tianjin, China. Facilities include Early Learning Centres, specialized classrooms, sports grounds, and, at the Keysborough campus, extensive bus services including private and public transport options. The City campus is a vertical school located in the Melbourne CBD.

Students have access to a wide range of co-curricular activities, including Creative Arts, Sport, and the Haileybury Swim Club. Other opportunities include Curious Minds, Experiential Learning, Social Justice initiatives, and various leadership roles within the Junior, Middle, and Senior schools.
