Admissions
The admissions process is designed to be personal and bespoke, beginning with registration and followed by introductory visits or Open Days. Prospective pupils undergo an individual admissions visit, which includes an interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, a meeting with parents, and tours of specific facilities or departments. Required documentation includes a current school report, passport, and any relevant Educational Psychology reports. Experience Days are available for Lower School entry from Year 5.
Calendar
The school operates on a three-term structure: Michaelmas, Lent, and Summer. Each term includes scheduled exeats and half-term breaks, with boarders returning on designated evenings before the start of term. The academic year concludes with leavers’ celebrations in early July.
Facilities
About the campus
Located on a 180-acre estate in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the campus features a historic Grade 1 listed mansion and abbey. Sports facilities include a 25-metre indoor pool, a sports hall, a gym, a 9-hole golf course, a golf simulator, and various pitches for football, rugby, cricket, and volleyball. The grounds also accommodate tracks for athletics, cross-country, mountain biking, and road biking, as well as an equine track.
Co-curriculars
The school offers over 60 clubs and activities, including the Combined Cadet Force and Round Square. A dedicated co-curricular programme provides opportunities for students to engage in leadership, service, and creative pursuits. The school also maintains a farm and stables, allowing students to participate in practical activities and animal care.




James WatsonHeadmasterMr Watson became Headmaster in September 2023, having previously served as Senior Deputy Head, Head of Learning Development, and Head of History at the school. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh and a PGCE from the University of Buckingham, and he previously had a 13-year career in finance.
Chris BarnesSenior Deputy HeadChris joined Milton Abbey in 2012 as a Housemaster and held various senior management roles, including Deputy Head (Pastoral & Boarding) and Deputy Head (Co-Curricular), before being promoted to Senior Deputy Head in September 2023. Before his career in education, he worked in the finance and travel industries.
Steve LaneDirector of Finance and OperationsSteve joined Milton Abbey as Finance Director in 2016, bringing experience from a career in finance and commerce, including roles at Ernst and Young and as a Regional Commercial Director for an international travel retail group. He later retrained as a mathematics teacher and now oversees the school’s support functions as Director of Finance and Operations.
Claudia HindleDeputy Head (Development & Admissions)Claudia joined in January 2022 as Deputy Head Academic and Head of Admissions, bringing experience from Roedean where she was Head of Classics. She holds degrees from St Andrews and Cambridge, and is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at the University of Bath.
Zoe LivingstoneDeputy Head (Pastoral)Zoe joined in February 2024 from Stonyhurst College, where she held several senior roles including Acting Housemistress and Designated Safeguarding Lead. She holds a degree in International Business and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Nottingham.
Will FraserDeputy Head (Co-Curricular)Will holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of St Andrews and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Buckingham. He has extensive experience in education, including roles as Housemaster of Athelstan House and Head of Lower School at Milton Abbey, and has also served as a governor at other schools.
