Northcoast Preparatory and Performing Arts Academy

Founded in 2000, the school aims to create a respectful and inspiring learning environment where academic achievement and responsible citizenship are valued equally. Its mission emphasizes the development of breadth of mind, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning and social awareness. The school seeks to instill an understanding of Western heritage while fostering international mindedness, personal integrity, and a sense of civic duty.

The school offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, utilizing the Middle Years Programme for grades 6–8 and the IB Diploma Programme for grades 11–12. The middle school curriculum covers language and literature, Spanish and French, individuals and societies, mathematics, sciences, arts, and design technology. The high school curriculum includes core courses in English, history, mathematics, sciences, and foreign languages, culminating in the full IB diploma course of study, which features subjects such as Theory of Knowledge, various HL/SL sciences, and arts. Additionally, all students participate in a Literature Seminar Series and must complete 25 hours of community service each semester.

The school has a strong record of college preparation, with over 95% of graduates admitted to four-year colleges of their choice, often with substantial scholarships. It has been recognized for its academic rigor, including rankings as a top-performing high school in the United States by publications such as Newsweek and The Washington Post. Furthermore, 96% of students pass at least one college-level exam during their high school career, and many students earn the California Seal of Biliteracy.

The school maintains a small class size and a low student-teacher ratio to foster an environment conducive to individual attention and academic success. Vertical articulation between the middle and high school curricula ensures a smooth transition for students as they progress through the grade levels. Additionally, the school provides a college counselor to assist students with their post-secondary planning.

The school accepts applications for grades 6–12, with separate enrollment processes for the middle and high school campuses. Prospective families are required to submit registration forms, proof of residence, and, for athletes, a physician-completed sports waiver. An initial enrollment deadline is set for February 20, 2026, though inquiries regarding space availability are accepted after this date. Information meetings are held annually in January at the high school campus to introduce the school's programs to the public.

The school operates on a full-year academic calendar with distinct schedules for the middle and high school divisions. The academic year includes scheduled breaks, such as spring break, and concludes with various student events and milestones. The school operates two campuses in Arcata, California: a middle school facility located on Bayside Road and a high school campus situated at the Arcata Methodist Church site on 11th Street. The high school campus includes a sanctuary used for meetings and events. Both campuses are equipped to support the school's rigorous academic and arts curricula, with technology integrated throughout the learning environment, including individual Chromebooks for students.

Students participate in a wide range of activities, including the Young Actors Guild, the Jane’s Creek Restoration Project, and the Literature Seminar Program. Athletics are a significant part of student life, with seasonal offerings in tennis, volleyball, cross country, basketball, and track & field. Other traditions and opportunities include the Cotillion Ball, the Halloween House, Poetry Out Loud, student publications, a student speaker contest, and various international trips to partner schools in Thailand, India, and Sweden.
