St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery is a monastic community located in the southern Arizona desert that follows the coenobitic tradition of the Holy Mountain, Athos. Established in 1995, it serves as a center for Orthodox Christian prayer, work, and hospitality.

Teaching approach

St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery follows the coenobitic rule of monastic life, where a brotherhood of monks and novices holds all things in common. The community operates under obedience to an abbot and adheres to a daily cycle of prayer, spiritual reading, and work, rooted in the millennial heritage of the Holy Mountain, Athos. The monastery is dedicated to St. Anthony the Great, the 3rd-century father of monasticism, and seeks to preserve the sacred traditions and wisdom of the holy fathers.

Programmes

The monastery’s daily programme is structured around a cycle of prayer, beginning at midnight with personal prayer and spiritual reading, followed by morning prayers and the Divine Liturgy. The work day involves tasks such as construction, groundskeeping, vinedressing, gardening, woodworking, publishing, and food preparation. Additionally, the monastery maintains a publishing arm, SAGOM Press, which produces books on Orthodox theology, the lives of contemporary Elders, and prayer books.
