St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College

Guided by the motto 'Christus Lumen Gentium' (Christ Light of the Nations), the college aims to provide a thorough training in the knowledge and principles of the Catholic faith combined with a high-quality secular education. The educational approach is built upon six core virtues: Aspiration, Self-Control, Reflection, Service, Courage, and Autonomy. The mission is to nurture students who are intellectually accomplished, morally grounded, and spiritually alive.

The curriculum is structured into three core elements: Ecclesia (faith and community), Scholastica (academic development), and Olympia (participation). Academic subjects are organized into five divisions: Julian of Norwich (English, French, RE, Spanish), Teresa of Avila (Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology), Catherine of Siena (Maths, Science, ICT, Technology), Therese of Lisieux (Citizenship, Outdoor Education), and Hildegard of Bingen (Performing Arts, Art, Photography, PE). Students in Key Stage 3 work toward the Christus Lumen Gentium Diploma, while Key Stage 4 students follow a core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, and RE, supplemented by three optional subjects.

The college was most recently inspected under the Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI) framework in June 2025, receiving a 'good' overall rating with 'outstanding' marks for its Catholic life and mission. The curriculum is designed to foster happy, confident, and spiritually awake life-long learners who are intellectually accomplished and morally grounded.

The college provides dedicated support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Inclusion coordinators are appointed for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 to oversee learning support and student welfare.

The college is a co-educational institution that prioritizes Catholic applicants in accordance with its oversubscription criteria. Prospective families must submit a Common Preference Form to the local authority and a Supplementary Information Form directly to the college to be considered for one of the 290 available Year 7 places. Admissions decisions are communicated by the local authority, and unsuccessful applicants have the right to appeal to an independent panel.

The college operates on a two-week timetable consisting of 30 lessons, each 100 minutes in duration. Term dates for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 academic years are published on the college website.

The college operates across two sites: the Ardor Upper School site in Highgate and the Ignis Lower School site on Cunliffe Road. Facilities available for community and venue hire include swimming pools, sports halls, football pitches, fitness suites, and various conference and meeting rooms. The campus also features specialized spaces for performing arts and studio work.

Students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of clubs, societies, trips, and activities, which are categorized under the 'Olympia' strand of the curriculum. Leadership opportunities are available through groups such as the Student Council, Stewardship, Solidarity, CathSoc, and the Sixth Form leadership team.
