Blessed Iwene Tansi Major Seminary is a Catholic theological institution in Onitsha, Nigeria, dedicated to the formation of candidates for the priesthood. Affiliated with the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, it provides a four-year programme in Catholic Theology.

Teaching approach

The seminary is built on the principle of familyhood, aspiring to be a community marked by love, respect, cooperation, and joy. Its motto, 'Homo Vivens Gloria Dei' (Man Fully Alive Is the Glory of God), guides its mission to nurture vocations through deep spiritual formation and disciplined community life. It emphasizes the integration of faith and reason, aiming to produce priests capable of addressing the complexities of contemporary society.

Programmes

The seminary offers a four-year programme in Catholic Theology, focusing on the final phase of priestly formation. While the core curriculum is centered on theology, it also includes courses in psychology, health-care, accounting, social communication, and African traditional religion and culture. Students are required to complete a research project under the direction of a supervisor to cultivate critical and reflective thinking.

Outcomes

The seminary prepares candidates for the Catholic priesthood, focusing on forming priests who are saints, gentlemen, and scholars. Since its inception in 2000, it has produced over 400 priests.

Admissions

About the campus

The campus features eight hostel buildings containing 288 student rooms and 32 flats for lecturers, each equipped with a chapel and meeting hall. Other facilities include a classroom block, a multi-purpose building serving as a temporary chapel, refectory, and kitchen, and an e-library. The grounds also house agricultural projects, including a farm, a pond management system, and a bakery.

Co-curriculars

Seminarians engage in discussions and debates among themselves and with students from other institutions. The seminary also organizes conferences, seminars, symposia, field research, and excursions to complement classroom learning. Additionally, students participate in agricultural projects, including farming, livestock, poultry, and fishery management.
