St. Matthias School

St. Matthias School is a Roman Catholic institution committed to the mission of Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic tradition. The school focuses on the development of the whole child, emphasizing spiritual, emotional, social, and academic growth to prepare students to live as disciples and citizens of the 21st century. The academic program spans Pre-K3 through Grade 8, following Core Curriculum guidelines set by the Diocese of Metuchen and New Jersey state standards. The curriculum includes core subjects such as Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, supplemented by "specials" including Art, Music, Library, and Technology. All students participate in Spanish language instruction, utilizing the Spanish School Bus program for grades 1-2 and an interactive module-based curriculum for grades 3-8. Physical Education and Health are also integrated into the comprehensive course of study.

Academic achievement is recognized quarterly for students in grades 5-8 through an Honor Roll system, which includes Honors, High Honors, and Principal’s List designations based on Grade Point Average. Students are prepared for success in a global and technological community through a curriculum aligned with Diocesan and New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards. Progress is monitored through the use of MAP Growth computer-adaptive testing, administered to students in grades 1-8 in the fall, winter, and spring.

The school provides a structured environment for student growth, including a screening process for incoming kindergarten students to assess individual learning levels. Faculty members utilize differentiated learning strategies and technology to support diverse student needs, with opportunities for parent-teacher conferences held twice yearly.

New student registration is managed through the school office, with specific processes for prospective families. The school offers a tuition discount for new students transferring from non-Catholic schools, and families may apply for tuition assistance through the Diocese of Metuchen’s online application process. All applicants must submit required documentation, including a signed Parish Verification form, by the annual March 31 deadline.

The school operates on a traditional academic calendar running from September through June. The schedule includes standard academic breaks and is updated annually to reflect the specific dates for the current school year.

The campus is located in Somerset, New Jersey, and features dedicated spaces for learning and development. Classrooms are equipped with modern technology, including Chromebooks for students in grades K-8 and Promethean Boards. The school grounds include a playground area used for recess and student activities.

Students have access to a variety of enrichment programs, clubs, and athletics designed to complement the academic experience. Offerings include a Drama Club for grades 6-8, a Student Council, a National Junior Honor Society, and a Running Club. Additionally, an After School Program (ASP) is available for all grades from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
