St. Matthias School is a Catholic educational institution in Somerset, New Jersey, serving students from Pre-K3 through Grade 8. It provides a comprehensive, faith-based academic program within a welcoming community environment.

Teaching approach

St. Matthias School is a Roman Catholic institution committed to the mission of Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic tradition. The school focuses on the development of the whole child, emphasizing spiritual, emotional, social, and academic growth to prepare students to live as disciples and citizens of the 21st century. The community values diversity and encourages students to share their time, treasure, and talent in service to others.

Programmes

The academic program spans Pre-K3 through Grade 8, following Core Curriculum guidelines set by the Diocese of Metuchen and New Jersey state standards. The curriculum includes core subjects such as Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, supplemented by "specials" including Art, Music, Library, and Technology. All students participate in Spanish language instruction, utilizing the Spanish School Bus program for grades 1-2 and an interactive module-based curriculum for grades 3-8. Physical Education and Health are also integrated into the comprehensive course of study.

Outcomes

Academic achievement is recognized quarterly for students in grades 5-8 through an Honor Roll system, which includes Honors, High Honors, and Principal’s List designations based on Grade Point Average. Students are prepared for success in a global and technological community through a curriculum aligned with Diocesan and New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards. Progress is monitored through the use of MAP Growth computer-adaptive testing, administered to students in grades 1-8 in the fall, winter, and spring.
