Whitby School

Whitby School combines the philosophy of Maria Montessori with the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme to create a student-centered learning environment. The school emphasizes the IB "Approaches to Learning," which focuses on five transdisciplinary skills: communication, social, self-management, research, and thinking skills. Its mission is to inspire a passion for learning and empower children to become open-minded, principled citizens in a global community.

The academic programme is divided into three main stages: the Montessori Children’s House (ages 18 months to Kindergarten), Lower School (Grades 1–4), and Middle School (Grades 5–8). The curriculum integrates world languages, with Spanish instruction beginning at 18 months and Chinese offered from the Primary level through Middle School. The school is accredited by both the American Montessori Society and the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The school prepares students for the transition to high school by fostering critical thinking, self-management, and communication skills. Students demonstrate their learning through milestones such as the Grade 4 IB PYP Exhibition and the Grade 8 Community Project, which requires a personal exploration of a passionate topic.

Whitby School accepts applications on a rolling basis for students aged 18 months through Grade 8. The admissions process requires an online inquiry, followed by a campus visit and the submission of an online application, including supporting recommendations and school transfer documents. The school evaluates each child’s maturity and developmental readiness to ensure appropriate grade placement.

The school operates on a standard academic year, with admissions applications accepted on a rolling basis for the upcoming school year. The campus occasionally observes late starts or delays due to weather conditions.

Located on a 32-acre wooded campus in Greenwich, Connecticut, the school features facilities designed for art, science, and technology. The campus includes mentally-stimulating classrooms and extensive outdoor areas to support the school's educational model.

The school offers a range of co-curricular activities, including athletics and an Experiential Term for Lower School students, which provides four days of engagement beyond the traditional classroom. Additionally, the school hosts Camp Whitby and various workshops, such as hands-on arts programming.
