The school is dedicated to providing a safe environment that supports critical thinking and the sharing of ideas. The educational approach focuses on helping students reach their fullest potential through individual discovery and the construction of knowledge.

The school follows the U.S. Common Core Educational Standards and offers an Advanced Placement (AP) program. In addition to the international curriculum, it provides an optional Dual Language Program for students from age 5 to Grade 12, delivered in collaboration with the Abraham Lincoln Private School, which meets Bulgarian Ministry of Education requirements. The curriculum is enriched by field trips, museum visits, and extracurricular activities.

Graduates of the American English Academy receive an American High School Diploma, which is recognized internationally. The school reports a 100% university or college admission rate for its graduates. Students in the optional Dual Language Program receive double certification, meeting both American and Bulgarian educational standards.

The school considers language support and special needs during the admissions evaluation process to ensure it can meet the educational requirements of each applicant. Class sizes are kept small, with an average of 12 students per class, to facilitate student-centered learning.

The school operates a selective admissions policy for students from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. Applicants for Grades 1-12 undergo an evaluation process that includes an entrance interview and an English language skills assessment. Priority is given to siblings of current students, children transferring from other international schools, and international citizens. Applications are accepted throughout the school year, provided space is available.

The school year at the American English Academy begins on September 15 and concludes on June 30.

Located in the Lozen area near Sofia, the 7,400-square-meter campus was purpose-built and received a national "Building of the Year" award. Facilities include classrooms equipped with Promethean Smartboards, a modern library with desktop computers and an interactive Promethean Table, and a spacious cafeteria providing freshly cooked meals. The campus also features a green roof terrace with views of the Vitosha and Balkan mountains.

The school offers a wide range of after-school activities and sports, with offerings varying based on student interest. Current activities include piano, ballet, art, and Lego courses, as well as competitive sports teams for basketball and soccer. Additionally, the school hosts events such as a winter musical production, Anti-Bullying Week, International Culture Week, and a science fair.
