Admissions

The school welcomes applications for students aged 11 to 18. Prospective families are encouraged to book an individual visit, which typically includes a student-led tour, meetings with house staff and the Headmaster, and lunch with the community. Registration requires a non-refundable administration fee of £100. The school offers means-tested bursaries for new applicants, as well as specific support for Catholic pupils through the Randag Fellows programme and fee concessions for children of HM Armed Forces and Diplomatic Service personnel.

Calendar

The school operates on a three-term structure (Summer, Autumn, and Lent). Terms include scheduled half-term breaks and exeats, with specific return and departure windows for boarders. The academic year concludes with an Exhibition event in the Summer Term, followed by prizegiving for Junior House. Parents' Days are held throughout the year for various year groups, often accompanied by a parents' retreat.

About the campus

Located in a valley in North Yorkshire, the campus features extensive facilities for academic and co-curricular pursuits. These include dedicated spaces for music, drama, and sports, as well as a library and a learning hub. The school also maintains an infirmary that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Co-curriculars

The school provides a wide range of co-curricular activities, including sports, music, drama, and dance. Students can participate in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and equestrian activities. There are also opportunities for charity and service work, as well as various trips and enrichment programmes designed to develop student interests and talents.

    Jon Mutton became Headmaster in January 2025. He holds degrees in Classics and English, a Masters in Classics, and a Masters in Educational Leadership, and has 14 years of experience at the college in various leadership roles.

    Dr Hannah Pomroy holds a PhD in Meteorology and a First Class Honours degree in Mathematics. She joined Ampleforth in 2009, previously serving as Head of Mathematics and Director of Studies before becoming Deputy Head.

    John Devitt holds a Master of Physics degree, a PGCE, and an MBA. He previously served as Head of Physics and Joint Head of Science at Ampleforth before returning in 2019 to lead the school as Deputy Head Academic and Director of Studies.

  • Matthew Glendon-DoyleDeputy Head Pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead

    Matt Glendon-Doyle joined as Deputy Head Pastoral and Safeguarding in September 2025 after eleven years at Radley College. He is a former investment banker who made a vocational move to teaching and has extensive experience in pastoral care and safeguarding.

    Helen Pepper has served as Assistant Head of Teaching and Learning since 2020 and holds a degree in Theology and Religious Studies and a Master's in Education Research from Cambridge. She is a lead inspector for the National Catholic Inspectorate and a published author.

    Rowland Hills is a former Management Consultant and COO who studied Engineering at Cambridge University. He brings an analytical approach to his role as Bursar and Chief Operating Officer.

    Victoria Anglim has a background in Engineering and has held several senior roles at Ampleforth, including Housemistress and Assistant Head (Boarding). She holds a Master’s degree in Senior Educational Leadership and is a Chartered Senior Leader.
