Teaching approach

Admissions

Anawakalmekak aims to accommodate all applicants, utilizing a lottery system if demand exceeds available space. Priority is granted to children of founding members, children of employees, siblings of currently enrolled students, and students considered educationally disadvantaged by the State of California. The school admits children who will be five years of age on or before September 1, with additional provisions for transitional kindergarten (TK) eligibility.

Calendar

The school operates on an instructional calendar with a structured daily bell schedule. For grades TK-5, the day typically begins at 8:30 am with morning cultural protocols and concludes with staggered dismissal times between 1:10 pm and 3:00 pm. The 6th-12th grade schedule includes morning cultural protocols, eight academic periods, and an after-school program that runs until 6:35 pm.

    Dr. Irene Vásquez is a co-founder of Semillas and has served as a member of the Council of Trustees since 2002. She holds a Ph.D. in History from UCLA and is currently the Director of the Chicano Hispano Mexicano Studies Program at the University of New Mexico, where she is also an Associate Professor in American Studies.

    Dr. Reynaldo F. Macías is a prominent education and sociolinguistics scholar who specializes in bilingual education, educational history, and policy analysis. He is a professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UCLA and previously served as the director of the University of California Linguistic Minority Research Institute.

    Ernesto Colín is an Assistant Professor in the Specialized Program in Urban Education at Loyola Marymount University. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in the Anthropology of Education.
