Term structure
Teaching approach
The school is guided by the Dalton Plan, which is built on four pillars: independence, collaboration, responsibility, and reflection. This framework aims to develop an extraordinary skillset, self-directed motivation, and academic buoyancy. The school's wellbeing program, 'Vi et Animo' (with heart, soul, strength, and courage), complements this by fostering a positive, inclusive culture based on values such as respect, kindness, and resilience.
Programmes
The academic programme is structured around the Dalton Plan, which consists of Assignments, Lessons, and Studies. The curriculum is delivered through three stages: Hillingdon (Prep to Year 2) for activity-based learning, Fiona (Years 3 to 6) for a formative academic programme, and the Senior School (Years 7 to 12) which prepares students for the HSC. The Dalton Plan introduces students to self-directed learning, where they manage their own time and workload through weekly assignments and student-led study sessions.
Outcomes
Ascham students consistently achieve academic success, with 2024 Year 12 students receiving offers for university entry. The school's Dalton Plan and leadership programs are designed to prepare students for tertiary studies and professional careers by fostering independence, resilience, and a proactive approach to challenges. Graduates are encouraged to become brave, resourceful leaders who contribute positively to society.
Student support
Learning support
The Dalton Plan provides a structured framework where students have access to one-on-one time with teachers during 'Studies' to resolve queries and receive feedback. This approach allows for differentiated tasks and personalized support, enabling students to work at their own pace and receive specific guidance based on their individual learning needs. The school also integrates a wellbeing framework, 'Vi et Animo', to support students' social, emotional, and physical development.
