Programmes

The curriculum is broad and balanced, covering linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human, social, physical, and creative areas from Early Years through to GCSE. Specialist teaching is provided from the earliest years, and the school offers the flexibility to tailor pupil pathways. Subjects include Business Studies, Design & Technology, Food Preparation & Nutrition, ICT & Computing, Mathematics, Science, Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Textiles, English, French, Geography, History, Religious Studies, and Spanish.

Outcomes

Ballard maintains a strong focus on academic excellence, recently celebrating GCSE results where half of all grades achieved were 9–7, significantly exceeding the national average. The school was named Independent Co-educational School of the Year 2024–25 and has received awards for excellence in sport, fine art, and the performing arts. Alumni have gone on to compete at Olympic and Paralympic levels.

Admissions

Ballard is a co-educational day school for pupils aged 2–16. Entry is available across various year groups, with key entry points at Nursery, Reception, Year 3, and Year 7. Offers are made on a best-fit basis following a Taster Day or the Year 7 Admissions Day, and registration is required prior to these assessments.

Calendar

The school operates on a three-term academic year (Autumn, Spring, and Summer). Terms typically begin in early September, early January, and mid-April, with half-term breaks scheduled in each term. The academic year concludes in early July with Speech Day.

About the campus

Set on a 34-acre campus, the school features a historic Arts and Crafts-style main building alongside modern resources. Facilities include four senior science laboratories, a junior science lab, a Design & Technology suite with 3D printers and laser cutters, two art studios, a textiles studio, and two food technology suites. Sports facilities comprise a full-size sports hall, an Olympic-sized Astro pitch, expansive sports fields, a heated swimming pool, multi-use courts, and a gymnastics facility. Performing arts resources include a 170-seater theatre with professional lighting and sound, a dance studio with a sprung floor, and music technology suites. The grounds also feature two Forest School sites, a Victorian Water Garden, and adventure playgrounds.

Co-curriculars

The school provides over 175 co-curricular activities each week, spanning sporting, cultural, artistic, and academic interests. Offerings include music, drama, dance, textiles, Forest School, Beach School, and various sports such as football, rugby, cricket, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, netball, and basketball. Pupils also participate in competitive events, such as triathlons and athletics championships, and have opportunities for charity work and leadership.

    Stuart TurnerHeadmaster

    Stuart Turner joined Ballard in April 2026, arriving from Emanuel School in London where he spent five years as a deputy head. He has over twenty years of experience in independent education, having previously held roles at Merchant Taylors’ Northwood, Putney High School, and Alleyn’s School. He is a Geography teacher by background and holds a cheese mongering qualification.

  • Chris JacksonDeputy Head Pastoral

    Chris Jackson holds a Psychology degree and has experience in both state and independent education, including 17 years at Stroud School and time at King Edward VI School (KES) in Southampton. He has taught pupils from Nursery through to Year 13, with specialisms in Science, Sport, Psychology, and PSHE. He is a lifelong sports enthusiast who has lived and played hockey in Australia and Paris.

  • Victoria GrayDeputy Head Co-Curricular & Operations

    Victoria Gray is a former Director of Music and Director of Performing Arts at Ballard, having joined the school initially as a peripatetic vocal teacher before becoming a class teacher. She graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and worked as a freelance performer and choral conductor. Both of her children attended Ballard from Nursery to GCSE.

  • John WalterDirector of Curriculum & Assessment

    John Walter graduated from the University of Exeter and has taught Maths and Physical Education at schools in London, including holding leadership positions as Head of 6th Form. He qualified as an Advance Skills Teacher in 2010 and worked as an A Level Examiner before spending 2018 at Christian Brothers College in Melbourne, Australia, as Head of Teaching & Learning. He joined Ballard in September 2022.

  • Ollie RoseDirector of Teaching and Learning

    Ollie Rose holds a BA Hons in History from Swansea University and a PGCE Secondary in History from York University. Since gaining his QTS in 2011, he has taught in various settings, including a state comprehensive, an inner-city academy, and an independent international school in Kuala Lumpur. He joined Ballard in 2021 as Head of History before becoming Director of Teaching and Learning.

  • Rebecca MunroBursar

    Rebecca Munro graduated from the University of Portsmouth in Accounting and began her career as an Operations Manager at House of Fraser. She moved into education in 2013 as a School Business Manager in Poole and joined Ballard in 2018. She has leadership responsibility for all operational functions, including financial management, budgeting, and governance.
