Beacon Academy is a tuition-free, 10-year program that prepares students from historically under-resourced communities to succeed in competitive high schools, colleges, and careers. The school partners with students from their 8th-grade year through college graduation and early career launch.

Teaching approach
Beacon Academy is committed to closing the opportunity gap for determined and inquisitive students from historically under-resourced or underrepresented communities. The school centers its work on educational equity, justice, and the well-being of its students, aiming to help them develop their identities and build lives of agency and impact. It emphasizes high expectations, curiosity, and the belief that access to opportunity should be universal.
Programmes
The core of the academic offering is an intensive "gap" year following 8th grade that blends 8th and 9th-grade curricula. The academic program includes Humanities (literature and history), Mathematics (foundational arithmetic through algebra), Science (lab-based inquiry), Research and Advocacy, and Study Skills and Time Management. The 10-year program provides long-term support, including secondary school placement, college advising, and career development.
Outcomes
Beacon Academy reports a 98% high school graduation rate and a 92% college matriculation rate for its alumni. Graduates have successfully enrolled in 112 different colleges and have been placed at numerous competitive independent secondary schools, including Phillips Academy Andover, Concord Academy, and Noble & Greenough School. The school also maintains a career network, BeaconConnect, to support alumni with job and internship opportunities.

The school provides sustained academic, social-emotional, and mental health support that continues through high school, college, and early career exploration. Students receive individualized academic advising, mentorship, and one-to-one tutoring. The program maintains a 6:1 student-teacher ratio to ensure students receive personalized feedback and guidance.

Admissions
Beacon Academy recruits students currently in 8th grade who live in Boston and surrounding areas and demonstrate academic promise. The admissions process is holistic and selective, requiring academic records, teacher recommendations, a student interview, and family engagement. Families must also complete a financial aid application through Clarity or the School and Student Services (PFS) website.
About the campus
The school is located in a 17,000-square-foot granite building in Roslindale Village, Boston. The campus features spacious meeting areas, classrooms, and offices designed to facilitate collaboration. Students also have access to modern technology, including graphing calculators, Desmos, and Google Classroom.
Co-curriculars
Students participate in a variety of co-curricular activities designed to broaden their experiences. Offerings include sports such as rowing and soccer, as well as cultural trips to institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts and the theater. Additionally, the school organizes weekend field trips to destinations such as Martha’s Vineyard and Stowe, Vermont.
Charles E. Carter, Jr., Ph.D., LICSWCEO & Head of SchoolDr. Carter has over 20 years of experience working with children and families with limited access to power and privilege, and has committed his career to improving social and economic justice. Before joining Beacon Academy, he was a founding member of the leadership team for Project Evident and served as Deputy Director and Chief Strategy Officer at the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. He holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in Social Work from Boston College.
Danielle BoudreauChief Advancement OfficerDanielle Boudreau has over two decades of experience supporting the fundraising needs of high-impact, entrepreneurial nonprofit organizations. Prior to joining Beacon Academy, she worked as the Director of Investor Relations at New Profit Inc. and as a private consultant. She is a former Board member at KIPP: Massachusetts and currently serves on their Development Committee.
Karen LiberatoreDirector of Operations & Chief of StaffKaren Liberatore has extensive experience working with youth and families across diverse settings, including roles in the nonprofit sector directing after-school programs and managing operations. She previously served as the first female Director of Camp Hale and worked as a reading specialist in public schools. She holds a Master’s in Education from Simmons University and a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Smith College.
Sarah HoldenDirector of Enrollment & PlacementSarah Holden has over two decades of experience helping students and families navigate educational paths, with a career shaped by a commitment to educational equity. She previously built and scaled a college success program at Brooke Charter School and served as the Guidance Director at Beacon High School. She holds an Ed.S. in School Counseling from UMass Amherst, an M.Ed. from Lesley University, and a B.A. from Wheaton College.
Anne-Marie Yu-PhelpsDirector of the Academy YearAnne-Marie Yu-Phelps previously worked for three years in a women’s holistic health and education center in Brazil as a Maryknoll Lay Missioner. She also taught for ten years at Newton Country Day School and taught English in Honduras, Hong Kong, and Texas. She graduated from Amherst College and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard with a focus on teaching and curriculum for secondary school English.
Ashley MirandaDirector of Alumni Support ServicesAshley Miranda has a background in education equity and supporting students through educational transitions, having previously served as the Associate Director of Talent at BES. Her experience also includes roles as the Assistant Teen Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester and as an Alumni Services Coordinator for Roxbury Preparatory Charter School. She holds a Master of Arts in Digital Culture & Society from King’s College London and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Amherst College.
Annie Jean-BaptisteAssociate Director of Enrollment and PlacementAnnie Jean-Baptiste is an education professional with a Master’s degree in Teacher Education History and Education Policy from Brandeis University. She has experience as a classroom teacher, facilitator, and guidance counselor, and is a member of the 2024-2025 SPARK Boston Council.
