Medan Independent School is the pioneer of international education in Medan, established in 1969. It is the only IB Continuum school in Sumatra, offering the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes.

Learning support

Admissions

The school year runs from August to June, with applications accepted throughout the year based on capacity. The process includes a basic application, a personal interview, and three free trial days for all grades. Students entering Grade 3 or above must complete a MAP test in Reading Comprehension, Language & Literature, and Math. Enrollment requires students to be at least 3 years old and potty-trained, with entrance ages determined by academic records and age as of October 1st.

Calendar

The academic year begins in August and concludes in June. The school provides a detailed calendar of events, including holidays, teacher preparation weeks, and orientation days. For the 2026-2027 cycle, the school year starts on August 6, 2026, following a teacher preparation period in late July and early August.

About the campus

The 23,000-square-meter campus is designed as a tropical garden oasis and includes a modern science lab, an Apple-based ICT lab, and an art and design room. Sports facilities feature a 60-meter by 30-meter soccer field, a multi-purpose gymnasium, a swimming pool with a dedicated kids' section, and a rock climbing wall. The library houses over 16,000 resources, and the campus provides multiple playgrounds, including an adventure playground and a preschool-specific area.

Co-curriculars

Students have access to a variety of activities, including an after-school rock band class and music instruction in angklung, ukulele, and gamelan. The school also hosts events involving music, performances, plays, and exhibitions in its venue hall. Physical activities include weekly swimming lessons, soccer, futsal, basketball, badminton, table tennis, and gymnastics.

    Mr. Gaetano is a returning Principal who holds an MA in K-12 Educational Leadership from Michigan State University, an M.Ed from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a BA in Music from the same university. He has led a successful DP implementation at MIS.

    Mr. Ryan earned a Master of Arts degree in Political Science, as well as a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He is certified to teach K–6 and has experience working in schools across Canada, South Korea, the Middle East, and Indonesia.

    GREG MCGUIREMYP COORDINATOR, MYP/DP TEACHER

    Mr. McGuire received his B.Sc. from the University of New Brunswick and his B.Ed. from St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada. He holds a teaching license from the Province of New Brunswick and has taught overseas in Colombia and Jamaica before joining MIS in 2009.

    Mr. Sloane holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Charles Sturt University, Australia, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business & PG DP Marketing from London University, UK. With over 30 years of teaching experience across various countries, he also leads the EAL program at MIS.

    Mr. Henry earned his Bachelor of Computer Engineering from STMIK Mikroskil Medan and a Diploma in Hardware Engineering from UNPAD. Before joining MIS in 2017, he handled General Affairs at the British Council Indonesia Foundation and currently oversees school compliance and ground staff.
