Teaching approach

Red Balloon operates on a philosophy of unconditional positive regard, ensuring every student is treated with respect and dignity regardless of their academic performance or behaviour. The school serves as an alternative to mainstream education for young people who have self-excluded due to mental health challenges, bullying, or trauma. It prioritises mental wellbeing alongside academic achievement, aiming to provide a safe, non-traditional environment where students can re-engage with learning at their own pace.

Programmes

The school offers a negotiated, individualised curriculum for students aged 11–18, ranging from Entry Level to GCSE. The programme is built on three components: education, wellbeing, and social re-engagement. Students follow a tailored timetable that includes core subjects like Maths, English, and Science, alongside PSHEE, careers guidance, and therapeutic sessions. Provision is delivered either full-time in-person at physical centres or through a hybrid model at Red Balloon of the Air, which combines online learning with face-to-face social and academic activities.

Outcomes

The school aims to help students restore their confidence, develop resilience, and build the skills necessary to successfully return to mainstream school, further training, or work. Attainment is measured against individual needs and personal goals rather than solely by exam grades. Students at physical centres can take up to five GCSEs, while Red Balloon of the Air students can typically take three, with the possibility of five for those staying for two years.

Learning support

The school provides a holistic, multi-faceted support system that integrates education, mental wellbeing, and social re-engagement. Every student is assigned a Transition Lead (at physical centres) or a Link Mentor (at Red Balloon of the Air) to coordinate their academic, personal, and social development. The centres offer counselling and therapy, and staff are trained in providing unconditional positive regard to support students who have experienced bullying, trauma, or severe social anxiety.

Admissions

The admissions process begins with an initial discussion with a Head of Centre or the Red Balloon of the Air admissions team to explore the school's three-pronged approach. Following this, prospective students visit a centre to become familiar with the environment. Admission is contingent upon the student agreeing to three conditions: a desire to attend regularly, a commitment to learning and academic progress, and a pledge to behave with respect and consideration toward others and the property. Most centres require students to have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for funding purposes.

Calendar

Red Balloon operates on a term-based schedule. The centres provide full-time, term-based provision, with additional activities, trips, and social events occurring throughout the year.

About the campus

Red Balloon operates five physical centres based in houses to provide a safe, homely environment, as well as a hybrid online/face-to-face provision called Red Balloon of the Air. Physical centres are located in Aylesbury, Cambridge, Norfolk, Reading, and Worthing, with an additional learning hub in Danbury, Essex. These centres are registered exam centres and feature small, supportive learning spaces, with communal areas where students and staff eat lunch together.

Co-curriculars

Physical centres offer a variety of extracurricular activities, trips, and social events throughout the year. Students also engage in personal development and community sessions as part of their negotiated curriculum. Staff-led initiatives, such as yoga sessions, are also available to support the community.
