Roedean School

Founded in 1903, the school is guided by the values of Truth, Honour, Freedom, and Courtesy. It aims to nurture socially responsible young women who lead lives of significance, with a focus on academic excellence, civic duty, and cultural diversity. The school is an accredited 'Thinking School' and a member of the Round Square association, emphasizing character development and personal responsibility.

The curriculum spans from Grade 0 to Matric, incorporating a Cognitive Education Programme that emphasizes metacognition, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. The Foundation Phase (St Margaret’s) utilizes the Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar programmes to develop literacy. The IT curriculum integrates technology such as iPads, drones, virtual reality, and robotics (Sphero and Lego), supported by the CyberSharp Digital Citizenship Curriculum. Social responsibility projects, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, are integrated across the curriculum.

The school prioritizes emotional intelligence and well-being through a dedicated pastoral team, which includes a Deputy Head: Pastoral and a team of psychologists. To monitor student mental health and identify those at risk, the school utilizes the Steerglobal AS Tracking tool. This support system is designed to foster resilience, empathy, and effective stress management.

The school maintains an average class size of 25 pupils, often necessitating a waiting list before the formal application process begins. Prospective families may book private tours of the Junior School on Wednesdays and Thursdays, or the Senior School on Wednesdays. A limited number of scholarships are awarded annually to Grade 8 students based on talent in academics, sports, or culture. Additionally, the school partners with organizations such as the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, the Aumund Fund, and the Student Scholarship Programme to award up to six bursaries each year to pupils entering Grade 8.

The school operates on a three-term academic year. In 2026, Term 1 runs from 14 January to 1 April, Term 2 from 5 May to 5 August, and Term 3 from 1 September to 2 December. Each term includes a mid-term break.

The campus features historic buildings designed by Sir Herbert Baker, set within extensive gardens. Academic and specialized facilities include the Fred & Renee England Centre for Maths Excellence, a Music Centre, and an Aquatic Centre that hosts a learn-to-swim programme.
