St Matthias Academy

St Matthias Academy is dedicated to providing a nurturing, emotionally safe, and academically challenging environment for students facing significant educational barriers. The school focuses on empowering young people by blending academic and vocational learning with personal development, aiming to help students understand themselves as learners and successfully transition to mainstream, special school, or alternative provision settings. It operates as a community where staff, families, and students collaborate to overcome obstacles and unlock individual potential.

The academy offers a broad, inclusive curriculum that mirrors a mainstream education as closely as possible to facilitate successful re-integration. The programme blends academic and vocational subjects, delivered by subject specialists using highly differentiated approaches to reinforce key skills and close educational gaps. Beyond core academics, the school provides enrichment and personal development opportunities to prepare students for the responsibilities of adult life.

The academy employs trauma-informed approaches to support student development and behaviour management. Staff are experienced in working with pupils who have had negative mainstream experiences, and the school provides various therapeutic interventions designed to build student resilience, self-confidence, and emotional well-being. Additionally, the school has designated SENDCo leads for both the Bristol and BANES regions.

St Matthias Academy serves the Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset regions as an alternative provision. Students are admitted via three specific routes: referral through the Local Authority Fair Access Panel, permanent exclusion from a mainstream setting, or enrolment on a preventative programme as a 'Revolving Door' student. Parents and carers are unable to apply directly for a school place.

The school operates on a term-based system, with the academic year concluding in July. The school calendar includes scheduled staff training days during which the facility is closed to students.

The academy operates across three distinct sites: the East/Central campus in Fishponds, the North campus in Brentry, and the Bath campus. These locations provide the physical environment for the school's alternative provision programmes.
