Washington International School is an independent, coeducational day school serving students from Preschool through Grade 12. It provides an internationally-focused education grounded in inquiry-based pedagogy and language immersion.

Teaching approach

The school’s mission is to be an exemplary learning community that is enriched by differences, informed through inquiry, and global in reach. It values international-mindedness, integrity, inclusivity, and curiosity, encouraging students to challenge assertions and think deeply. Language learning is considered a cornerstone of the academic program, serving as a lens for understanding diverse perspectives.

Programmes

The academic program is structured around the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, specifically the Primary Years Program (PYP) for Preschool through Grade 5 and the IB Diploma Program for Grades 11–12. The curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, with language study—including French and Spanish immersion in the early years and Mandarin starting in Grade 6—serving as a central component. The program integrates subjects such as mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts through Units of Inquiry.

Outcomes

The school is authorized to offer the IB Diploma Program, and 33% of graduates attend colleges outside the United States. Students are prepared to be bilingual and biliterate, with a strong emphasis on international-mindedness and the ability to act as change agents in a global context.
