Serenity School Crawley

Serenity School follows a therapeutic, humanistic approach to education based on the psychological model of Carl Rogers, which emphasizes that individuals reach their full potential when specific conditions for growth are met. The school prioritizes emotional development and self-awareness, operating on the belief that cognitive needs can only be addressed once safety, belonging, and esteem needs are satisfied. The core values of inclusion, independence, and self-worth underpin the school's mission to support vulnerable children.

The school offers a 3-Tier Curriculum tailored to different student needs: a Nurture Centre pathway for pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), a Semi-Formal pathway for those with ASD and other learning difficulties, and a Formal pathway for students with EHCPs for conditions such as ASD, ADHD, and SLCD. The curriculum incorporates the Early Years and Foundation Stage, the National Curriculum, and a creative curriculum, with accreditation available at Key Stage 4. Instruction balances academic and vocational learning, depending on the age of the student.

The school utilizes a Socio-Education Model with a five-part cycle aimed at preventing students from becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). Students are supported to move seamlessly to the next stage of their education or career, such as college or apprenticeships, with a focus on building a strong sense of identity and self-worth.

The school employs a multidisciplinary team including special education teachers, instructional aides, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. Therapeutic support is integrated into the curriculum, utilizing speech and occupational therapy methods alongside Affective Education to address emotional, social, and behavioural difficulties.

Serenity School supports pupils with Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs), often involving autism and other special educational needs and disabilities. The admissions process involves a thorough assessment of the EHCP by accredited psychologists to determine suitability, with the option for a period of assessment to ensure the placement meets the student's needs. Parents and carers are encouraged to contact the head of referrals to discuss the process, which prioritizes student safety and support during the transition.

The school operates across multiple locations, including sites in Eltham, Coulsdon, Crawley, Maidstone, and Croydon. Classrooms are designed for small groups of 4–8 students, maintaining student-to-staff ratios ranging from 2:1 to 1:1 to facilitate individualised attention.

Students engage in community immersion through volunteer activities, service learning projects, and community outings. These activities are designed to support the development of social and independent skills necessary for adulthood.
