Curriculum

The Green Room Foundation is an independent educational provider that operates two day schools and a post-16 college, offering alternative, high-support pathways for students aged 11 to 25. It focuses on re-engaging pupils with education through a personalised, therapeutic approach that prepares them for adulthood, further education, or employment.

Teaching approach

The school is rooted in an ethos of kindness, curiosity, and mutual respect, aiming to provide a safe, unjudged space for students to grow and prepare for the future. It prioritises honest conversation, small class sizes, and one-to-one time to help pupils re-engage with education. The school maintains a high-support, high-challenge approach, encouraging students to be brave, challenge their own beliefs, and develop the resilience needed to navigate an uncertain world.

Programmes

The curriculum covers core subjects including Maths, English, and Science, with qualifications available through GCSEs, Entry Level Certificates, and AQA Unit Awards. Vocational pathways include BTEC qualifications in Land-Based Studies (Animal Care, Equine, and Horticulture), Art and Design, and Home Cooking Skills. The school also provides PSHE and Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), alongside a 'Level Best' self-actualisation programme. Post-16 students attend The Green Room College, which supports their transition into further education, employment, or independent ventures.

Learning support

The school provides high-support, high-challenge environments with a strong emphasis on therapeutic care and individualised attention. Two humanistic therapists work to build trusting relationships with pupils, offering regular assessments and one-to-one sessions to support self-development and resilience. Additionally, the school offers outreach support to bridge the gap between home and school, addressing mental and physical health, school refusal, and transitions. All pupils receive bespoke 1:1 sessions in English and Maths to address learning gaps and ensure progress.

Admissions

The admissions process begins with an initial enquiry and the submission of an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) for review by the school's admissions panel. If a potential fit is identified, the applicant, family, and relevant support workers are invited for a tour and meeting with senior staff to discuss the student's needs and aspirations. Following this, the school may arrange trial days to further assess suitability before seeking final council approval for the placement. Once a place is offered, the school develops a bespoke, personalised integration plan, which may include baseline academic testing and vocational assessments to support the student's transition.

About the campus

The Green Room operates across three distinct sites: a school in Windsor, a 120-acre site in the Hampshire countryside at Kingsley, and a college provision based at The Swan in Clewer, Windsor. The Kingsley campus features animal enclosures, an allotment, a polytunnel, and a purpose-built barn for construction and vocational activities. The college site at The Swan provides students with a real-life working environment to support their transition into adulthood. Both school sites are equipped with classrooms and spaces designed to foster a safe, supportive learning atmosphere.

Co-curriculars

The school offers a diverse range of co-curricular activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and teamwork. These include the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, music lessons for instruments such as guitar, piano, and drums, and weekly enrichment sessions covering topics like photography, languages, and life skills. Additionally, students participate in regular sports coaching, bushcraft skills, and educational or reward-based trips. Pupils also engage in land-based studies, including animal care and horticulture, and have opportunities for work experience starting in Year 9.
