MEES International School is a boutique international school in Tokyo offering a child-centered, project-based learning (PBL) curriculum for preschool and elementary students. It focuses on fostering student agency, digital literacy, and a deep connection to nature through mixed-age cohorts.
Curriculum
Teaching approach
MEES International School is founded on the belief that children are instinctual learners who thrive when they take ownership of their education. The school prioritizes a child-centered, project-based learning (PBL) model that emphasizes independence, creativity, and problem-solving within a supportive, non-competitive environment. It integrates digital literacy and outdoor education to foster resilience, environmental awareness, and a lifelong love of learning.
Programmes
The academic program is built around Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Design Thinking, which integrate core subjects like math, science, language arts, and social studies. The school utilizes mixed-age cohorts to encourage mentorship and collaboration. English is the primary language of instruction, though the school values and respects home languages to support multilingualism. The curriculum also includes a dedicated Forest School program and a strong emphasis on digital literacy, including coding and programming.
Outcomes
The school aims to prepare students for a future shaped by technology and AI by fostering critical and creative thinking, integrity, resilience, and effective communication. Students are encouraged to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners who can navigate and shape the digital landscape. The curriculum focuses on building confidence and adaptability rather than prioritizing test scores.
Student support
Learning support
The school emphasizes a child-centered approach that aligns individual needs with project-based learning. It provides language support and maintains a focus on social development, encouraging peer interactions that respect individual differences. Guidance on school-wide well-being is provided by a professional advisor specializing in educational psychology.

The school reserves the right to decline applications without providing specific reasons.

About the campus
The school operates across two locations in Bunkyo, Tokyo: the Hakusan campus and the Sendagi campus. The learning environment integrates digital technology, including programming and digital design tools, and utilizes natural environments for outdoor education, such as the Forest School program. A bus service is available upon request.
Co-curriculars
Afterschool programs include an Afternoon Immersion program for ages 1 to 6, and various clubs for ages 6 to 11, such as a PBL & Design Thinking Club, MakerSpace, Tasty Lab, Tech Club, Judo Club, and English Club.
