Walden International School

Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, the school is committed to fostering independent, self-reliant learners in a nature-centric environment. Its core purpose is "Making Good People," based on the belief that out of goodness arises greatness. The school prioritizes a student-centered ecosystem that values kindness, empathy, and inclusivity over standardized testing and high marks.

The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for ages 3–12 and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for ages 11–16. The curriculum integrates traditional subjects with transdisciplinary themes, focusing on inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application. In addition to core academics, students receive specialist instruction in French, P.E., Design, and the Arts.

Walden aims to cultivate principled, compassionate, and confident young people who are prepared to become globally responsible citizens. The school provides additional help or tutoring for new students to assist with their transition into the Walden environment. Walden International School accepts applications for students from Junior Kindergarten (JK) through Grade 8 on a rolling basis. The process begins with an inquiry, followed by a mandatory two-day class visit for the student, after which families may be invited to submit a formal application. The school welcomes students at all levels and provides support to help new arrivals adjust to the Walden approach.

The school operates on a standard academic year, with classes typically beginning in September. The calendar includes various community-focused events, such as Open Houses, and incorporates "Wellness Wednesday" excursions throughout the year. Extended care is available before school from 7:30 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. and after school from dismissal until 6:00 p.m.

Located on the grounds of a former private school in Oakville, the campus features architecture originally designed as a family home, providing a warm and scaled environment for learning. The school includes classrooms for inquiry-based learning, and students have access to specialist instruction in areas such as P.E., Design, and the Arts. The site also supports various outdoor and community-based learning activities.

Co-curricular offerings are designed to support the development of the whole child and include field trips aligned with the Programme of Inquiry. Students in grades 4–8 have access to extra-curricular activities such as varsity sports, a spring musical, concert band, and various volunteer opportunities. The school also hosts "Wellness Wednesday" excursions that relate to the IB Learner Profile attributes.
