Amsterdam Liberal Arts & Sciences Academie (ALASCA)

ALASCA is an innovative school that combines high academic ambitions with a unique educational concept centered on customization and challenge. It emphasizes moral development, citizenship, philosophy, and digital skills such as design and programming. The school fosters an environment where students are encouraged to be ambitious, contribute positively to their community, and learn from the experience of making mistakes.

The curriculum is modular and largely interdisciplinary, integrating traditional subjects into thematic modules—such as 'Universe' (physics, chemistry, geography) or 'Amsterdam' (history, philosophy, art, Dutch, geography). While the lower years focus on this modular approach, the upper years transition toward more traditional subject-based instruction for exam preparation. Additionally, the school offers an International Profile, which includes an International Profile Preparatory Year (IPY) and the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) for students in their final years.

ALASCA admits students with vwo, havo/vwo, or havo recommendations, with 112 places available annually for new first-year students. For the International Profile, the school offers a Preparatory Year (IPY) for students aged 15-16 and the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) for students aged 16-18. Admission to these international tracks requires an academic record sufficient for the corresponding year of pre-university education, proficiency in English, and an admission interview with the DP Coordinator or career counsellor.

The school operates on a standard academic year with scheduled breaks including autumn, Christmas, spring, and May holidays, as well as a summer break. Specific dates for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic years are published in the school's annual holiday overview.

The campus is located at Geertje Wielemaplein 1 in Amsterdam and is designed to be accessible by bicycle, featuring a large indoor bicycle storage facility. It is also well-connected to public transport via tram 26 and bus 37. Students are required to work with laptops as part of their daily learning environment.
