Optimist International Academy (OIA) is a publicly funded international school in the Netherlands providing a continuous, inquiry-based learning pathway for students aged 4 to 18. Located in Hoofddorp, the school offers an inclusive, multilingual environment that bridges local and international perspectives.

Teaching approach

OIA is guided by the IB Learner Profile and a commitment to inquiry-based, concept-driven education. The school fosters a learner-centred environment that values diversity, multilingualism, and global mindedness, encouraging students to take ownership of their development. The educational approach aims to build curiosity, independence, and a sense of agency, preparing students to navigate a changing world with confidence and care.

Programmes

OIA offers a continuous international pathway from Early Years through Secondary, with English as the primary language of instruction and Dutch taught as an additional language. The curriculum is inquiry-based and thematic, drawing on the UK National Curriculum as a framework for primary language and mathematics. The school is a candidate for the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), with future development towards the Diploma Programme envisaged.

Outcomes

The school prepares students to continue their education globally through an inquiry-driven, English-medium international approach. Students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with a focus on academic, social, and emotional growth. Graduates are equipped to transition to other international schools or, via a specific transition programme, into the Dutch HAVO or VWO secondary pathways.

Admissions

OIA is a publicly funded international school that welcomes students from international families temporarily residing in the Netherlands, as well as Dutch families returning from abroad or preparing for an international move. Eligibility is defined by Dutch law, requiring either non-Dutch nationality with a parent working in the Netherlands, or Dutch nationality with a history of living and schooling abroad or upcoming relocation abroad. The admissions process involves registering interest via the OpenApply portal, an introductory meeting, a formal application, and a potential taster day or "come and play" session for prospective students.

About the campus

OIA operates across two campuses in Hoofddorp: the Primary school on Dussenstraat and the Secondary school on Baron de Coubertinlaan. Both locations are situated in quiet residential areas with access to public transport, bike paths, and free parking. The facilities include thoughtfully designed, stimulating learning spaces, and primary students have access to a local pool for a structured swimming programme.

Co-curriculars

The school partners with UniKidz, a bilingual Dutch–English after-school care provider located on the primary campus for children aged 4–13. The programme includes activities across four development areas: FitKidz (sport and exercise), SkillsKidz (making and creating), SoulKidz (heart and soul), and MindKidz (development and education). Additionally, the school collaborates with Sportservice Haarlemmermeer to provide regular outdoor sports and movement activities.
