The Rowans AP Academy is an alternative provision school that enables young people to change the direction of their lives by re-engaging with education. It provides a flexible, high-quality, and inclusive environment for pupils who struggle in mainstream settings.

Teaching approach

The school is built on the core values of kindness, commitment, and resilience, operating under the ethos of "Inspiring change for a brighter future." It utilizes a trauma-informed approach to help pupils re-engage with education, take ownership of their lives, and build strong, trusting relationships with staff. The school emphasizes inclusivity, aiming to rebuild emotional damage and raise the aspirations of every pupil.

Programmes

The school offers a bespoke curriculum that combines academic learning, vocational routes, and tailored interventions. At Key Stage 4, pupils can choose from 14 subjects, including Art, Computing, Construction, Design Technology, Engineering, English, Food and Nutrition, Humanities, Land-Based Studies, Maths, Photography, PSHE, Public Services, Science, Sport, Textiles, and Travel and Tourism. Additionally, the school operates a Primary SEMH provision that integrates therapeutic input with academic learning.

Outcomes

In 2021, 70.6% of Year 11 pupils achieved five or more qualifications, including English and maths. The school aims for all pupils to achieve English and maths qualifications, with opportunities to earn up to seven additional qualifications across Key Stage 4. The school was judged "Outstanding" by Ofsted in 2015 and 2021, and in 2026, it was rated "Strong Standard" across all areas under the new report-card framework.
