Carmel School

The school is guided by the principles of 'Excellence, Community, Tradition,' aiming to develop the whole child within a strong moral and ethical framework. It seeks to teach students how to live in two civilizations—Jewish and secular—and how to achieve a synthesis between Jewish culture and the culture of the wider world. The school fosters intellectual curiosity, self-directed learning, and the individual development of each child, emphasizing the IB Learner Profile.

Carmel School is an IB Continuum School authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). The academic offering spans from early years programmes—including Tzutzik, Ganeynu, Nursery, and Pre-Kindergarten—through to Grade 12. The curriculum integrates international studies with Jewish values, culture, and Hebrew language learning. High school students in the Diploma Programme are evaluated through a holistic process that includes academic portfolios and Service as Action (SaA) requirements.

Graduates of Carmel School have gone on to study at top educational institutions worldwide. The school emphasizes the development of independent thinkers and communicators who are prepared for the academic and personal challenges of tertiary education. Students are encouraged to become responsible, caring global citizens who contribute to both the Jewish and wider world.

The school maintains a generous teacher-to-student ratio and utilizes a personalized approach to education. Financial assistance is available for families demonstrating bona fide financial need, subject to specific criteria and review by the Bursar Subcommittee.

The school is a non-profit, co-educational institution that welcomes students from all strands of Judaism and does not confer Jewish status. Elsa High School accepts non-Jewish students, and across all levels, children with at least one Jewish parent are eligible for admission. The process includes an application form, student questionnaire for secondary applicants, educator recommendations, and an on-site interview with faculty. Applicants must also complete the MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) entrance exam, and non-native English speakers may be required to provide internationally recognized English proficiency assessments. Priority is given to siblings of current students, children of school or Jewish community employees, and members of Hong Kong's Jewish community.

The school operates on a standard academic year, with the first day of school typically occurring in mid-August. The calendar includes designated breaks for school holidays, public holidays, and Jewish High Holidays. Carmel School operates across three campuses on Hong Kong Island. The Holly Rofé Early Learning Centre is located in the Jewish Community Centre on Robinson Road, Mid-Levels; the Carmel Elementary Campus is situated on Borrett Road, Mid-Levels; and the Elsa High School Campus is located in Shau Kei Wan. Facilities across these sites include dedicated STEAM spaces, a fully equipped robotics lab, and library resources.

The school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities designed to complement the academic curriculum. These include performing arts, sports, and a robust STEAM programme. Students participate in initiatives such as the Robotics programme, which includes a fully equipped robotics lab and opportunities to compete in international events like the FIRST Robotics competition. Additionally, the school hosts whole-school events such as the Design Challenge.
